On November 11, 2014, the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa will be rededicated. The inscription In Service to Canada / Au service du Canada will be added to formally recognize all Canadians who served in the past, who serve today and who will serve in the future.

The dates of the Afghanistan mission and the South African War will also be added. This Remembrance Day, take two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. to reflect on those who have given their all for our country in the cause of peace and freedom.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Local Landscaping Company Supports Earth Day Ottawa

Apr 28, 2014

lawn care ottawaCaring for the Earth is extremely important to us and our future. Perhaps your parents once told you to leave the place you were visiting cleaner than it was when you got there; well the same goes for our planet. We’ve truly used many of our planets natural resources, but it’s also important that we give back.

Giving back can be done simply in many ways such as recycling, monitoring your water or energy use and even making eco-friendly conscious decisions such as opting for an eco-friendly renovation, or selecting a company whose services are more environmentally friendly. We are proud to say that Instant Lawns is a proud supporter of Earth Day Ottawa, and provides our Earth with friendly outdoor solutions including sodding, re-sodding, seeding, gardening and landscaping. One house at a time they are truly making our planet a little greener.

What Do They Offer?

Instant Lawns offers ‘Instant Gassification’ to their clients, ensuring they get exactly what they need in a timely manner. Unlike most lawn care and landscaping companies Instant Lawns won’t make you wait a long time for a response, they’ll get a hold of you as soon as they can.

Sodding

Instant Lawns highly recommends sodding for the ‘Instant Grassification’ effect. It is nice to know that you can come home to a beautiful looking lawn after only a day’s work. Not only is sodding great for the environment, but it will also have all of your neighbours jealous as you’ll have the best looking lawn in the neighbourhood.

Re-Sodding

Re-sodding is also recommended for home owners that have difficulties with their lawns. Although you may think that a little care and hard work can make your lawn look good again – this is not always the case. Don’t waste your evenings and weekends on trying to fix the inevitable and call Instant Lawns to give you the green lawn you’ve been looking for.

Seeding

Many home owners tend to think that seeding will always do the trick, however Instant Lawns highly recommends sodding over seeding. If you’re still interested in seeding, contact Instant Lawns to see how they can help you make your lawn lush and green again.

Other

Green Energy Made Simple With These Great Tips!

Nov 11, 2013

You probably know some of the advantages of solar panels to save energy in your home. The following guide will state the benefits of using solar panels and give you an idea on how to implement green energy into their lifestyle.

When drawing up the landscaping plans for a garden path or patio, consider solar-powered lamps. These lamps are inexpensive and don’t require any kind of power besides sun exposure. This doesn’t merely save you a ton of energy. It also means that you avoid having to go outside and wire lights outdoor.

Wash your clothes in cold water. Almost ninety percent of the energy used by a washing machine comes from heating the water. As long as the washing detergent you use is reliable, using cold water is just as effective.

Many heating systems can be switched over to run on biodiesel without any extra modifications or modifications.

The sun can really make your clothing smell incredible. They will feel and smell fresher than if you were to use a dryer. You will also save on utility bills by line drying your laundry.

Solar power can heat water for a lesser cost.Consider a hot-water system that runs off of solar water heater. You can select from a direct circulation systems or an indirect varieties. Indirect systems are the best option for those who have pipes which often freeze in the winter.

If you are considering the installation of home solar energy, you need to calculate the amount of power the system can produce using winter sunshine hours. This will ensure that you are not caught short during winter, while leaving you safely ahead of your needs during the summer.

Use a tankless and more green instead of a tank style heater. Tankless heaters still use electricity or gas to provide hot water, but they are more effective in heating solely the water necessary instead of a huge tank of water constantly. Tankless heaters are available in models that supply the entire house or certain faucets.

Learn about the difference between passive and active solar power. While passive simply uses the sun in storing thermal energy inside your walls to heat your house.

Avoid turning the heat in your home unless it’s absolutely necessary. If it’s chilly, put on a sweater or blanket instead. You use a lot of energy if you have heat on higher than necessary.

You can actually use biofuels to add heat your house. These fuels are made up of animal or vegetable fats, wood or oil to create energy. This would contain anywhere from 20-99% biodiesel. Make sure you ask a professional before you try this fuel inside your household.

The venerable habit of turning of unnecessary lights and devices when you exit a room. Turning off lights will add up to great energy savings over time. You also will be saving money on your power bill.

A simple way to start going green energy bandwagon is through your utility provider.Utility companies provide some powerful tools that let you see the amount of energy you use and ways to reduce the consumption. Also check out programs which can help with the cost of energy efficient appliances and light bulbs.

Green tech products are a bit more pricey than conventional products, but your utility bills will be reduced. It is also pay off in the environment is concerned.

Replace your windows with weather-sealed efficient ones. These windows reduce energy costs, makes your home quieter, a quieter home, and less condensation on the interior of your windows.

A simple way to locate appliances and products that are energy efficient is to search for an Energy Star logo. ENERGY STAR appliances must meet all the guidelines from the U.S. Department of Energy and those of Environmental Protection Agency. These products are usually the only ones that can be used for tax rebates.

The result will be minimized energy usage cuts and maximized dollar saving.

In the months with more sunshine and longer days, leave lights off until a specific time of day. Try installing timers and dimmers to control your light usage of lights.

Automatic ice makers often use lots of extra energy and are prone to breaking down. They can also have leaky seals, which can increase the internal temperature of your freezer. Avoid these problems by making your ice in trays.

There are new jobs in the green energy market. Think about changing careers or advising children to prepare themselves for working in green energy if you’d like to make a career change.Find out about new jobs like wind or solar technicians.

As you could see, solar panels have a lot of desirable benefits when it comes to home owners, aside from saving energy. They are easy to install and purchase, and could last for a long time. The environmental benefits couple with an increase in home value and function to make this a great choice in home renovation.

Indoor Air Quality Testing

Earth Day 2014 and Your Indoor Air Quality Test

Oct 28, 2013

About one month into spring, on Tuesday April 22, we’ll come together to celebrate and reflect on environmental protection and reform—to express gratitude for fresh air and an all-around clean Earth. When we think of Earth Day, we think of achieving green, garbage-free pastures and clear, blue skies; we think of the outdoors. Though it’s incredibly important to work toward keeping our outdoor environment a well-kept and healthy one, did you know that, in Canada, we spend a whopping 90 per cent of our time indoors?

earth-day

This Earth Day, consider improving not solely the outdoor environment but your indoor environment as well, be it your home, your office, or your child’s school. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is often overlooked. You might even think that by retreating indoors, you’re escaping—protecting yourself and your family—from harmful air pollutants lurking outside. While this may be true in some cases, many homes are packed full of dangerous air pollutants. And, considering we spend a vast majority of our time in the “comfort” of our homes, surely they warrant the same care we give to the fields, trees, streets, and parks near and far.

There are two types of air contaminants potentially invading your home: biological contaminants and chemical contaminants. Biological contaminants include mold spores, pet dander, pollen, and bacteria—to name a few. Chemical contaminants include vapours from household and personal care products, radon, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and other chemicals often given off by deteriorating building materials.

Either type of contaminant can harm your health and even put your life at risk. Moreover, you may live in the presence of and exposed to some of these air pollutants for years without even realizing it, as there are few signs or initial symptoms of exposure. Radon, for instance, is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas, and exposure to it has been linked to the development of lung cancer.

There are several ways you can improve your indoor air quality, but there is only one starting point: an indoor air quality test. The only way you’ll know whether or not your indoor air is putting the health of you and your loved ones at risk is to book an air test. Air quality experts will take air samples and ship them to an accredited laboratory, where they are thoroughly analyzed. Based on results, remediation may be required. If this is the case, professionals can promptly remove any asbestos-containing insulation or mold-laden floor boards without trouble, reducing or eliminating your exposure to indoor air pollutants.

If results indicate there’s no problem, it’s important to continue to monitor and maintain your indoor air quality. Pay attention to allergy-like symptoms, such as irritation in the throat or eyes. Properly ventilate your home to control humidity and moisture levels. Rather than ignoring unfamiliar odours or using scented spray to cover them up, find their source in case they’re spawn by a bigger problem, such as mold.

This Earth Day, and every other day of the year, appreciate and strive for fresher air and a healthier living environment both inside and out.

Keeping Up With Eco-Friendly Trends in Ottawa

Aug 20, 2013

Ottawa is one of the world’s leading environmentally-friendly cities, boasting organizations such as Green Ottawa, green stores such as Terra20, eco-friendly moving companies such as Box Your Move, and expos such as the Green Living Show. Distinct focus on themes such as the environment, sustainability, conservation, renewable energy and healthy, human-powered lifestyles charge the efforts to a green city.

Green Ottawa is a local organization that focuses on offering research tools, support, and online community & forum for locals interested in sustainability and eco-friendly alternatives. Their website includes events, green jobs, directory, and news. Local organizations like this help make Ottawa what it is today, by connecting locals with companies and organizations that care about the environment and their city.

terra20

Terra20 is and Ottawa-based shop. According to their website, “Terra20’s one purpose is to encourage a healthier, sustainable lifestyle.” They do this by seeking out innovative products – from sustainable fashion to green household supplies to all-natural baby products – and creating the largest selection under one roof. They were founded in 2006 by Steve Kaminski and his friend Bill Stewart. Their vision was to have a place where eco-friendly products could all be found under one roof. Their store recently opened and made their vision a reality.

Box Your Move is an Ottawa-based moving company that has a relatively new concept – plastic moving boxes. These boxes are a movement in themselves, moving away from cardboard boxes that are filling our landfills and lying on our city streets, ripped and torn. While many companies have copied this model, Box Your Move is one of Ottawa’s first companies to adopt this approach successfully. Their moving services provide an alternative to the usual 18-wheeler style move, reduced to a smaller, more eco-friendly truck.

Back in April, held in Toronto, the Green Living Show featured some of the most cutting-edge eco-friendly products and innovators. They highlighted trends and innovations such as upcycling, wheat-based paper, wool dryer balls and packaging with biodegradable and recyclable materials.

The rise of ethically-minded customers has driven companies to offer innovative and sustainable products and services to help preserve the beauty of nature. Ottawa-Gatineau continues to be a leader in innovation and one of the World’s greenest metropolitan areas.
